Getting your motivation back

Motivation does not usually come first – it often only appears once you get going. When your enthusiasm has gone, start so small that failing is almost impossible. This guide shows you how to restart yourself and when a lack of motivation may be a sign of something else.

You will need

Steps

  1. Find out where your motivation went

Write down whether the lack of enthusiasm is about one particular thing, such as work or exercise, or your whole life. A lack of motivation about one thing can often be solved with changes; a wider one may point to exhaustion or low mood.

  2. Find your own reason

  3. Break the goal into small pieces

  4. Use the two-minute rule

  5. Make your progress visible

  6. Reward yourself immediately

  7. Tell someone

  8. Notice when you need help
