Returning to exercise after being ill

Exercising during an infection can prolong the illness, and exertion with a fever can, at worst, expose you to myocarditis. A moderate, gradual return protects your heart and gets your fitness back fastest.

You will need

Steps

  1. Don't exercise with a fever

If you have a fever, muscle aches or general symptoms, rest. A feverish infection also puts a strain on your heart.

  2. Assess your symptoms

  3. Wait after a fever

  4. Start gently

  5. Increase gradually

  6. Monitor your resting heart rate and how you feel

  7. Recognise the warning signs

  8. Ask about lingering symptoms
