Getting fit for a hike

A multi-day hike puts more strain on your legs, back and endurance than many people expect. If you prepare for a few months, the hike becomes a pleasure rather than a battle for survival.

You will need

Steps

  1. Assess how demanding the hike is

Find out the daily distances, the elevation changes and the weight of your rucksack. On Lapland's fell trails, for example, a day can add up to 15–25 km over varied terrain.

  2. Start 8–12 weeks before

  3. Walk in the terrain

  4. Add the rucksack gradually

  5. Train on hills and stairs

  6. Strengthen your muscles

  7. Get your feet used to the boots

  8. Do a trial hike
