Using a drill and screwdriver
A drill is the most important tool in the home, but the wrong bit or setting will damage the wall or the screw head. This guide teaches you the basics so that pictures, shelves and furniture stay firmly in place.
You will need
- A cordless drill or hammer drill
- Drill bits: wood, metal and masonry bits
- Screwdriver bits (e.g. PH, PZ and Torx)
- Wall plugs for different wall materials
- Safety goggles
- A pipe and cable detector
Steps
Identify the wall material
Knock on the wall and test-drill with a small bit: plasterboard sounds hollow and the dust is white, concrete produces grey dust and brick red dust. The material decides the bit and the plug.
Check for cables and pipes
Choose the right bit
Set up the drill
Drill straight
Clean the hole and fit the plug
Screw with the right bit
