How sleep changes as we age

As we age, sleep often becomes lighter and more broken, and many people wake up earlier in the morning. Some of the changes are normal, but good habits and daytime activity can improve the quality of sleep significantly.

You will need

Steps

  1. Know the normal changes

For many people, the share of deep sleep decreases, waking at night becomes more frequent and the sleep rhythm shifts earlier with age. If you feel alert during the day, shorter sleep may be enough.

  2. Keep a sleep diary

  3. Get outdoors in daylight

  4. Stay active

  5. Limit daytime naps

  6. Reduce night-time trips to the toilet

  7. Check your medicines

  8. Keep nights safe

  9. Tell your doctor
