Dyeing textiles

Dyeing fabric gives an old garment a new lease of life or adds a personal touch of colour. At home you can dye with fabric dye or natural dyes.

You will need

• Fabric dye or machine dye
• The textile to be dyed (cotton, linen or wool)
• Salt or dye fixative
• A large pot or bucket
• Rubber gloves
• Stirring stick

Steps

1. Check the material

   Natural fibres dye best. Polyester barely takes up any colour.

2. Wash the textile

3. Prepare the dye bath

4. Immerse the textile

5. Stir

6. Rinse

7. Wash separately
