Moving furniture, pets' claws and grit leave marks on a wooden floor. You can make most scratches almost invisible with the right method once you have first found out whether the floor is lacquered or oiled.

You will need

  1. Identify the finish

Put a drop of water on the floor in an inconspicuous spot. If the water beads for a long time, the surface is probably lacquered, and if it soaks in or darkens the wood, the surface is oiled.

  2. Clean the spot

  3. Repair surface scratches

  4. Fill deep dents

  5. Repair an oiled floor

  6. Touch up the lacquer if needed

  7. Prevent new scratches
