Surface embroidery for beginners
Freehand surface embroidery is now a popular way to decorate clothes, pouches and pictures. With just a few stitches you can create striking flower and letter designs without counting squares.
You will need
- An embroidery hoop, about 15–20 cm
- A tightly woven cotton or linen fabric
- Embroidery thread (stranded cotton) in different colours
- Embroidery needles and small scissors
- A water-soluble marker or transfer pen
Steps
Fix the fabric in the hoop
Place the fabric between the rings of the hoop and tighten the screw until the surface is as taut as a drum skin. Taut fabric keeps the embroidery from puckering.
