Sleeping during bright summer nights
In the Finnish summer, bright nights, heat and the holiday rhythm easily disrupt sleep. Light in the evening delays the release of melatonin and makes you wake earlier in the morning. This guide helps you keep sleeping well during the summer months at home and at the summer cottage (mökki).
You will need
- Blackout curtains or a sleep mask
- A fan
- Earplugs for the cottage
- A regular wake-up time
Steps
Darken the bedroom
Fit blackout curtains, or temporarily attach blackout film or a dark cloth in front of the window. Don't tape aluminium foil directly onto the glass, because the heat can damage the window. At the cottage, a sleep mask is the easiest solution.
Cool things down in the evening
Dim the evening light
Keep your wake-up time
Get back into rhythm in time
Prepare for cottage noises
Go easy on evening alcohol
Accept a smaller sleep need
