Caring for your dog's paws in winter

Finnish winters put a dog's paws to the test: salt, grit and ice balls can cause wounds and cracked skin. A good paw routine takes only a few minutes after a walk. You will also learn to recognise when an injury needs a vet.

You will need

Steps

  1. Trim the hair between the pads

Use round-tipped scissors to cut the hair growing between the pads level with the pads. Ice balls build up in long hair, rubbing and causing wounds.

  2. Apply wax before the walk

  3. Get your dog used to booties

  4. Shorten walks in hard frost

  5. Wash the paws after the walk

  6. Check the pads

  7. Treat dry pads

  8. Get treatment if needed
