Helping your pet lose weight
Being overweight is one of the most common health problems in dogs and cats, and it increases the risk of joint problems, diabetes and breathing difficulties. Weight loss works when it is slow and consistent. Make a plan together with your vet, especially for a cat, for whom losing weight too fast is dangerous.
You will need
- Scales or access to the vet's scales
- Kitchen scales for weighing food
- A food diary
- Enrichment toys or a puzzle feeder
Steps
Assess body condition
Feel the sides: you should be able to feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat, and seen from above, your pet should have a visible waist. If you cannot feel the ribs, your pet is probably overweight.
Visit the vet
Weigh food to the gram
Count treats too
Increase exercise gradually
Slow down eating
Monitor weight
