Responding to a rent increase

A rent increase can come as a surprise and squeeze your budget quickly. Not all increases are in line with the agreement, however, and you can often negotiate them. In this guide you check the grounds for the increase and decide how to act.

You will need

Steps

  1. Read the increase clause in the agreement

A rental agreement usually has a clause that says how and when the rent is increased, for example according to the cost-of-living index or by a fixed percentage. In a fixed-term agreement, the rent can usually only be increased in line with the clause in the agreement.

  2. Check the calculation

  3. Check the notice period

  4. Compare with rents in your area

  5. Negotiate

  6. Adjust your budget

  7. Consider moving
