Replace a bicycle inner tube
A punctured inner tube is the most common problem for cyclists. Once you know how to replace it, you can be on your way again in fifteen minutes, even in the middle of a ride.
You will need
- A new inner tube in the right size and with the right valve type
- Tyre levers (2–3)
- A pump that fits your valve
- A spanner, if the bike has no quick-release lever
- A spare patch kit
Steps
Check the size and valve
The size is printed on the side of the tyre, for example 28-622 or 700x28C. Choose an inner tube of the same size with the same valve: Schrader (car), Presta or Dunlop (bicycle) valve.
Remove the wheel
Deflate and remove the tyre
Find the cause of the puncture
Fit the new inner tube
Lift the tyre edge back into place
Pump up and check
