Using a fire extinguisher

A handheld fire extinguisher puts out a fire that is just starting, if you know how to use it properly. Practise in advance.

You will need

• Handheld fire extinguisher (e.g. 6 kg powder extinguisher)
• Fire blanket

Steps

1. Position the extinguisher

   Keep the extinguisher in a visible place near an exit.

2. Pull the pin

3. Approach from the windward side

4. Aim at the base of the flames

5. Extinguish with short bursts

6. Make sure it is out

7. Maintain it
