Checking and storing your tyres

Tyres are a car's only contact with the road, and their condition affects braking distance and aquaplaning. Regular checks and proper storage extend the life of your tyres and save money.

You will need

Steps

  1. Measure the tread depth

Measure the tread at several points across the width of the tyre. The legal limit is 1.6 mm for summer tyres and 3 mm for winter tyres, but safety deteriorates before you reach these limits.

  2. Look at the wear pattern

  3. Look for damage

  4. Check the studs

  5. Find out the tyre's age

  6. Mark the positions

  7. Clean before storage

  8. Store them correctly
