Cleaning a washing machine and removing odours
A smelly washing machine passes the smell on to your clean clothes too. The smell usually comes from a bacterial film that builds up at low temperatures, lint and detergent residue, which you can remove in a few steps.
You will need
- A shallow container and towels for the water that drains out
- An old toothbrush
- Mild washing-up liquid
- Washing machine cleaner or citric acid
- Rubber gloves
Steps
Clean the door seal
Fold open the rubber door seal and wipe the slime, hair and coins out of its folds. Black spots are mould, which you can usually remove with detergent and a brush.
Wash the detergent drawer
Empty the lint filter
Run a hot wash empty
Leave the door open
Use less detergent
Wash hot now and then
Check the drain
