Recycling worn-out textiles

Worn and torn textiles should no longer go in mixed waste, because municipalities now collect end-of-life textiles (poistotekstiili) separately for fibre recycling. Not all clothes are accepted, however. This guide helps you sort textiles to donate, sell and recycle.

You will need

Steps

  1. Sort into three piles

Divide the textiles into intact and clean, repairable, and worn or torn. Intact items go for sale or donation, torn ones to textile collection.

  2. Donate intact clothes

  3. Know the collection requirements

  4. Separate shoes and accessories

  5. Pack them properly

  6. Take them to a collection point

  7. Reuse them yourself first

  8. Reduce textile waste in future
