Sew your first garment from a pattern
Sewing your own clothes starts with understanding the pattern. This guide takes an easy garment, such as joggers with cuffs or a simple top, from pattern to finished piece and explains the most common beginner mistakes.
You will need
- A sewing machine, ideally also an overlocker
- A pattern (from a magazine, a book or a digital pattern)
- Fabric as specified in the pattern
- Pattern paper and a pencil
- Fabric scissors, pins and a tape measure
- Thread and sewing machine needles suitable for the fabric
Steps
Choose an easy pattern
Start with a pattern that has few pieces, such as joggers with cuffs, a T-shirt or a stretchy skirt. Stretchy jersey forgives small measuring errors.
Take your measurements and choose a size
Trace the pattern
Pre-treat the fabric
Cut out the pieces
Sew in the order given
Try it on as you go
Finish and press
