Protecting your hearing at gigs and when playing

Noise-induced hearing damage and tinnitus are permanent, but they can almost always be prevented. This guide explains when sound levels become dangerous and how to protect your hearing so that music still sounds good.

You will need

Steps

  1. Know the dangerous sound levels

Long-term exposure to sound above 85 decibels can damage your hearing, and at concerts the level is often clearly higher. The louder the sound, the shorter the time it takes for damage to occur.

  2. Measure your rehearsal space

  3. Get musician's earplugs

  4. Consider custom earplugs

  5. Insert the earplugs correctly

  6. Take breaks and keep your distance

  7. Turn down your headphones

  8. Recognise the warning signs
