Stopping your puppy from biting

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, and biting is especially common while their teeth are changing. When you teach a puppy what it may bite and how hard, the biting phase passes without anyone having to fear those sharp teeth.

You will need

Steps

  1. Understand why puppies bite

Biting is increased by eagerness to play, tiredness, overexcitement and teething, which usually happens at around 3–7 months of age. Hard biting is not usually aggression.

  2. Offer something it may chew

  3. Stop play when biting is too hard

  4. Make sure it gets enough sleep

  5. Ease teething pain

  6. Guide children in play

  7. Avoid physical punishment

  8. Follow its progress
