Hardiness zones and choosing plants
Finland is divided into hardiness zones I–VIII for garden plants, and a plant chosen for the wrong zone can freeze in its first winter. This guide explains how to find out your zone and how to make use of your garden's microclimate when choosing plants.
You will need
- Your home town or municipality
- A hardiness zone map
- Notes on the sunny and shady spots in your garden
- The garden centre's plant list
Steps
Understand the zones
Zone I is on the south-west coast and in Åland, and the number rises as you go north, all the way to zone VIII in northern Lapland. A lower number means milder winters and a longer growing season.
