Draught-proofing windows and doors for winter
Draughty windows and doors let heat out and make your home uncomfortable. Replacing seals is one of the cheapest energy-saving measures, and you can do it yourself in one afternoon.
You will need
- Self-adhesive weatherstripping (EPDM rubber or silicone)
- A putty knife and cleaning product
- A tape measure and scissors
- A candle or incense stick for finding draughts
- A door bottom seal or draught excluder
Steps
Find the draughts
On a windy day, hold a lit candle or incense stick along the edges of windows and doors. If the flame flickers or the smoke bends, there is a leak.
Check the old seals
Measure the gap
Clean the surfaces
Fit the new seal
Seal the bottom of the door
Do not block the ventilation
