Replacing a car battery
A weak battery is the most common reason a car won't start in freezing weather. You can replace the battery yourself in most cars if you follow the right order.
You will need
- A new battery (right size, capacity and polarity)
- Spanners
- Protective gloves and goggles
- Terminal cleaning brush
Steps
Check the battery's condition
Have the battery tested at a service shop or with a meter. A battery more than 5–6 years old may fail in freezing weather.
Choose the right battery
Switch everything off
Disconnect the negative terminal first
Remove the bracket and lift out the battery
Clean the terminals
Install the new battery
Test and recycle
